The beginning of term saw us celebrating World Book Day and our love of reading at Goat Lees. We shared stories with our buddy classes, had the opportunity to get a new (to us) book at our book swap events, designed and decorated story-themed hot-air balloons for the library, sampled new books and authors at a book café and by playing musical chairs, created book boxes to showcase books we love and, of course, many of us chose to dress up as a favourite character. The whole school read the story The Bridges, by Tom Percival. It’s about a girl called Mia who feels all alone; so alone that it's as if she lives on a small island, far out to sea. One day, Mia is given a book - the first she has ever been able to call her own. As she reads the book, bridges appear and her island fills with colour and life. The more Mia reads, the stronger the bridges become  and a whole new world opens up to her.  We were so lucky to be able to take part in an online workshop – including a draw-along session - with the author and illustrator, Tom Percival, himself!
